What is Addiction

Addiction is formed through the continuous patterns of negative behavior. These negative patterns are a result of compulsive behaviors that are very harmful to a person. What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

This type of therapy is relatively new to the addiction treatment world. DBT is a form of cognitive behavior therapy that was brought to life in the 80’s. Dialectical behavior therapy focuses on the different social factors that contribute to a person’s thoughts and behaviors. The overall goal of DBT is to foster a complete sense of self-respect and well-being, while creating a more optimistic outlook on the world. Individuals will learn to avoid extreme high or low feelings by creating this optimistic outlook. 

Another awesome factor of DBT is that it helps to identify any negative behavior or thoughts an individual may have. These unwanted behaviors and thoughts tend to result in negative self-talk and low self-esteem. Through DBT, the individual and therapist work as a group to create more positive self-talk and awareness. They will identify any problems and work them out through each session. 

Individual Therapy Sessions

These sessions are held between a professional therapist or psychologist, and the individual in treatment. Every therapy session is completely private and confidential. The client will start out by identifying their issues, and learning the proper problem-solving behaviors they should utilize. If any self-harm or suicidal thoughts exist, they should be immediately addressed at the beginning of the session.

The long-term goal of these sessions is to work on improving the individuals overall quality of life. This includes both mental and psychical health, alongside healthy relationship building and self-love.

Group Therapy

Group therapy sessions will be facilitated by a professional DBT therapist who will guide the group throughout. During these sessions, patients will focus on different techniques used for a better quality of life. These techniques include the following:

  • Interpersonal Relations: this therapy helps to train individuals on how to properly react to common life situations. You will learn how to use self-respect, set boundaries, say no to things you no longer have interest in, and how to deal with conflict resolution 
  • Acceptance Skills: this method works by retraining your brain on how to handle stressful situations without turning to drugs or alcohol. It allows you to explore healthy coping mechanisms, and self-control. Acceptance has to do a lot with your mindset, so make it positive! 
  • Emotional Regulation: addiction brings you on a rollercoaster of emotions. From the highest of highs, to the lowest of lows, addiction leaves you feeling so many emotions. This type of therapy will teach you how to control your emotions in different situations.  
  • Mindfulness: mindfulness is the practice of stepping back and assessing a situation without any unwanted or unnecessary thoughts or behaviors. This is an imperative skill that combines all of the above skills into it. Simple things like learning how to control your breathing and emotions will help you out so much in life.
