Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is a cornerstone of addiction treatment. Addiction is a disease that affects millions of Americans a year. Addiction treatment options are expanding in a direct relationship with the need for treatment. As more people become addicted and need treatment, treatment options become more prevalent.

While the surge in need for addiction treatment can be disheartening, the increase in care and innovation it has caused are positive. There are a number of different therapies and treatment options available for addiction. One of the most common is this type of therapy.

Individual therapy is common because it has proven to be so effective. The individual approach inclines people to be more open and honest. It leads to the individual being more receptive, and is intensive. It is also results driven.

Benefits of Individual Therapy

While some people entering addiction treatment may plan to isolate and avoid their feelings, this is not an effective manner to overcome addiction. Individual therapy  prevents people from hiding their emotions. Experienced therapists are able to guide individuals through a session that leads to openness and trust.

This kind of therapy builds a relationship between the therapist and the patient. Over the course of just a few sessions, trust is built between the two. This results in honesty, and encourages people to address the tough issues that they may not feel comfortable talking about.

This one to one relationship between a therapist and an individual also leads to both people being more receptive. Group therapy and other types of therapy are fantastic, but when it comes to recognition and understanding, individual therapy takes the cake. It is also very intensive, which results in more accomplishment in less time.

Individual therapy can be especially powerful in overcoming past trauma, or troublesome events that prevent people from moving forward. It is also adjustable. There are a multitude of techniques that can be utilized by experienced therapists, resulting in a combination of modalities. This leads to better success rates.

Types of Individual Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is considered the gold standard in substance abuse treatment, and is one of the most common types of therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on identifying thought processes that lead to addiction and certain behaviors. This is then used to change those thinking patterns and reevaluate them to effectively impact future decisions.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is another common type of individual therapy that we utilize. It is considered to be a subcategory of CBT, but has other facets. It focuses on living in the current moment, identifying ways to cope with triggers and emotional or mental states. It is evidence based, like all the therapies we provide, and has shown promise in our clients.

Motivational interviewing is also utilized by some of our therapists. It involves the resolution of insecurities and building of motivation to change past behaviors. IT also can be beneficial in building response techniques to triggers for relapse.
